I have enjoyed:

Wii Fit. It’s mild, it’s fun, and it gets you started. It won’t peel the pounds away, but it can get and keep you motivated, and is perfect on cold winter days when you refuse to get up and do something more serious. Generally on low-motivation days I’ll start with this one, then move on to something more effective once I’ve gotten into my groove. It’s also super easy weight and exercise tracking

*Gold’s Gym Cardio Fitness. I think you’ll like this one. It’s just boxing, not kickboxing, but it’s rhythmic and fun, and really burns those calories while working the upper body. I used the wii ware game Helix to warm up for this, and got super sore if I skipped the warmup! Helix, on its own, is fun but won’t burn as many calories as we want it to.

Walk it Out: This is another fun title with music in it. It’s so dead simple it might as well be brain dead, but it just tracks your steps as you dance (whoops, I mean walk) around the room. I, of course, bop, dance, walk, and jog to up the calorie burn. Wheee! You can vary this further by watching a movie to keep yourself distracted while you pace, or if you have a treadmill or elliptical, hop on that for added resistance, difficulty, and calorie burn! Again, you’ll see people recommending that you add weights while you do this. Don’t do it! Joints are replaceable, but the replacements suck!

My Fitness Coach: this is both my favorite title and the one I yell at the most. “Maya,” the digital personal trainer, is TOUGH. She’s also effective. And smart. I’m amazed at how much data the program collects. Then it takes that collected data and makes a custom program for YOU that changes every day based on your energy level and whim that day, plus some random bits of Maya’s choosing. It has a decent built-in tracker: not as good as Wii Fit for tracking your daily exercise, but much better in terms of tracking your upper body, core, and lower-body strength, your flexibility, and the size of your thighs, biceps, etc. You can actually tell if the weight you’ve put on in the past 10 weeks is muscle, rather than fat, because your stomach shrank but your biceps got bigger. Cool! I especially saw an improvement in my core body strength with this program. The music is better than decent, as well.

Skip My Fitness Coach 2. It seeks to build on the fame of My Fitness Coach, and is utterly terrible. If you fall in love with Maya (which doesn’t keep me from screaming obscene things at her when she makes me work too hard, I assure you) as I have, you might want to get the PC version for travel. Maya + laptop = fitness anywhere! Woo hoo! The PC version is called “Yourself! Fitness” and actually exists for playstation and xbox, too.

“Just Dance” is also fun. It’s not a true fitness title, but you may have noticed I sometimes suffer from motivation problems. Getting in front of the TV and dancing like a goon, laughing the whole time, is good for me and easy to motivate myself to do. I recommend this for expressly that purpose.

Everything I’ve recommended is regularly on sale for $15-20, but you can always rent it if you aren’t sure. I am committed to digital fitness because DVDs bore me and I can’t seem to tromp out into the snow to hit the gym very regularly in the winter, so I got a gamefly account briefly and checked out every fitness title they had. The exception is Wii Fit. It costs a bundle, so borrow one from a friend or neighbor if you can. A lot of people let theirs collect dust and will be happy to loan it to you. I logged hundreds of hours on mine AND used it to do doctor-ordered exercises to rehab a broken bone, so I got my money’s worth out of it several times over. That said? Try it out. It isn’t for everyone.

Also not for everyone: EA Sports Active. I hate mine. It collects dust. It just isn’t *fun*. That said, I won’t add it to the “DO NOT TRY” list that Jillian Michaels and My Fitness Coach 2 live on. Lots of people love EA Sports Active. I can’t tell you why, because all of my friends hated it, too. *shrug* different strokes for different folks, no?

Anyway, that’s my Wii Fitness knowledge. I have added a yoga mat, rechargeable batteries, and one of those big inflatable balls to my wii gym, but to start all you need is a program you like. Good luck! I didn’t lose any weight, but I gained back 10 pounds of lost muscle when I started working out on the wii after a broken bone.

If you buy the Wii Fit Plus you will need the Fit Board (and a Wii of course). If you want to do boxing you will need a nunchuck but that is cheap. I have Fit Plus and I love it. It has yoga, strength exercises and lots of games. It also tells you how many calories you burn with each exercise.
